Physical Education

AIMS

The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.

INTENT

At Wateringbury Primary School, we strive to cultivate a love of sport and physical activity within a safe and supportive environment, challenging all learners. Our goal is to develop well-rounded athletes capable of applying transferable skills across various sports. By engaging in competitive sports, we teach children the values of cooperation, teamwork, and appropriate competition. Recognising swimming as an essential life skill, we aim for all children to leave primary school able to swim at least 25 meters.

IMPLEMENTATION

  • The PE progression of skills outlines the units of PE to be taught each year, ensuring all National Curriculum objectives are met and there is progression from one year to the next.
  • Staff have access to PE lesson plans, which are adapted accordingly depending on the needs of pupils. Pupils take part in two high quality lessons every week, where they learn transferrable skills across different areas of PE.
  • There is a wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer before school, during lunch and after school which pupils are encouraged to join, many of which are led by outside agencies and experts.
  • Children are invited to attend local sport opportunities within the local area, where they are given the chance to take part in healthy competition and experience new sports. Children’s cooperation and teamwork are developed alongside the development of character traits such as resilience and respect.
  • Staff are given specialist CPD from outside agencies to enhance their knowledge and skills of all areas of the PE curriculum.
  • Children’s progress and attainment are tracked through an assessment tool, which is analysed to identify areas of improvement in pupil development.
  • Children in KS2 swim once a week for a term each to ensure that by Year 6 they are all able to swim 20m and perform self-rescue.

IMPACT

The children will leave Wateringbury with a love for sport and physical activity, having been individually challenged and supported as needed. All students will develop a strong interest in PE, eagerly participating in every lesson with highly positive attitudes and a greater understanding of the importance of teamwork. As children transition from childhood to adulthood, they will be able to use the skills and knowledge gained from PE to lead happy and healthy lives.
